Documentary Review Series: Food Matters

Over this Lenten season, I am giving up Facebook entirely and hitting my list of must see/read documentaries and books. Since I am a total geek and take notes when I watch documentaries, I decided I would just turn my notes into documentary reviews. Easy peasy.

So here we go!

FOOD MATTERS. This is one of my favorite documentaries. From the compelling and jaw dropping statistics throughout to the charismatic tell-it-like-it-is Dr. Andrew W. Saul, I was practically on the edge of my seat the whole time. The second I heard Dr. Saul say that he teaches a class called “Forgotten Research in Medicine” I wished I could take it. (An online class perhaps, Dr. Saul? No seriously, PLEASE??)

There are THOUSANDS of studies showing that high doses of nutrients cure disease. Yes, CURE. Where are these studies?? They are in journals that have been blacklisted by the government. The US National Library of Medicine refuses to index them. This is the “forgotten research”.

Here’s some fun facts from the film:
-Spirulina has the highest (complete) protein content of any food in the world, and it’s completely absorbable
-Two handfuls of cashews (niacin) are just as effective as Prozac
-Megadoses of Vitamin C can cure cancer
-Drug companies can market a drug after doing 2 clinical trials where the drug is more effective than the placebo. HERE’S THE KICKER: They can have countless other studies where the results are the opposite, but as long as they have their 2 showing the “right” results, they get their license to market the new drug.
-A cancer survivor is a person who has undergone conventional treatment and been diagnosed as cancer free for 5 consecutive years. This means that if the cancer comes back after year 5 and the person ends up succumbing to the cancer, they died a cancer survivor. Whatthe??
-It’s ILLEGAL to treat cancer with nutritional therapy in most countries. (HOLY CRAP!! My brain is exploding all over again) Doctors “have” to treat with: 1) chemotherapy (which causes cancer), 2) radiation (which causes cancer) and 3) surgery.

Ever wonder why you hear that vitamins do help on the news and then a few weeks later they don’t, then they do then they don’t…? What gives? Those are all low dose vitamin studies. Mega dose studies, well those are the ones we can’t get our hands on.

You might be thinking, “If this were true, my doctor would know.” That’s a myth. A big fat smelly myth. That might be the craziest thing of all. Who would have thought that the professionals we go to and trust our health and our children’s health with would not or could not know some of this!!! The public is literally catching on to this stuff before traditional medical professionals!

I will leave you with some mind-blowing numbers.

Each year:
39,000 people die from unnecessary surgery and hospital error
80,000 people die from other hospital-caused infections
106,000 people die from adverse drug reactions
That’s 225,000 per year!
Over 600 PER DAY….UNNECESSARY deaths
(that made certain entities A LOT of money beforehand.)

Look how successful Western medicine is at treating these leading causes of death:
Each year 652,486 people die from heart disease and 553,888 die from cancer.
Over a million people per year succumb to UNSUCCESSFUL Western medicine.

This is absurd and infuriating. That is a Disease Care System NOT a Health Care System. And then you have doctors saying that taking too many vitamins can be bad. Really? There have been 10 ALLEGED deaths from vitamins in 23 years.

The contributing doctors in this documentary educate viewers on choices they may not have known they had in an effort to bring the control back to the individual. You really are your best doctor!

“Good health makes a lot of sense but it doesn’t make a lot of dollars” says my favorite Dr. Saul. And therein lies the rub.

Antioxidants are your BFF

Let’s start by a simple explanation of antioxidants. They remove bad stuff from your body. Bad stuff that end up doing bad things to your body. More specifically, they are: A chemical compound or substance that inhibits oxidation.

So what’s this oxidation stuff? I thought oxygen was good! It still is…and with proper nutrition, the body can handle a normal amount of oxidation. The process of oxidation can produce particles called “free radicals” though. Free radicals in the body are basically incomplete molecules and atoms. They are tiny “incomplete” particles. They look for something to grab onto, so they grab the nearest particle to them and go all Jerry McGuire on it (“You complete me.” ….Anyone? Anyone? Bueller?…..*crickets*)

The problem lies with the “particle” that they just claimed completes them, because it is usually cells and tissue, which were doing perfectly fine before you invited yourself over, thankyouverymuch. They go on to cause deterioration of those cells and tissues.

This causes a “chain reaction” of deterioration because they “steal” a part from whole cells and tissues to complete themselves. Then those particles have to “steal” parts from other whole particles, cells and tissue. It goes on and on! These shenanigans end up causing rapid aging and disease. All because free radicals have abandonment issues. Not cool.

So you can see this nasty chain of events that just gets worse and worse. Unless of course you are eating right and taking are of yourself. This is much easier said than done, particularly if you have grown up in America, fast food nation. If you are eating your fruits and vegetables, every day…and not just an apple, we’re talking all those recommended servings, or if you are juicing daily then you should look pretty good inside! Fruits and veggies are full of antioxidants! YAY! Fruits and veggies to the rescue! Mom was right about eating those!

But what ARE antioxidants? They are our little super heroes is what they are! They counteract or neutralize free radicals and their destructive effects, by donating what the free radicals need to be “complete”. Three cheers for antioxidants!!

I mentioned that the body is designed to handle a certain amount of oxidation and free radical activity. The problem is, there are additional sources of free radicals in our environment these days. Indoor and outdoor air pollution, home cleaning products, personal care products and cigarette smoke are common sources of free radicals.

The current “standard American diet” consists of fast foods, heavy on fats, breads, sugars and fatty meats. These types of foods do not contain antioxidants in any beneficial amount. Combine that with an increasingly toxic, free radical-laden environment and we are a hot mess inside.

Begin self-promo!

The best way to get your antioxidants will always be through your diet. A diet of whole living foods. For those of us who have a hard time eating the recommended amount, you can add a safety net.

Monavie juice blends deliver the antioxidant capacity of 13 fruits and vegetables (even more so in the Mx blend, which is equal to about 20).

Can’t I just get some other antioxidant product? Of course! However, the acai berry is one of the most antioxidant rich foods on the planet and Monavie has 4 of the 4 patents on this berry. This means that other products with acai will not have the same potency as Monavie products. So while you can certainly try getting your antioxidants elsewhere, if using acai, you won’t be getting near as many.

Monavie has just come out with some exclusive technology that allows you to find out your antioxidant level. Simply by scanning your finger with reflection spectroscopy, you will get a real time indication of your antioxidant level. This will in turn show you how well you are fighting off that early onset of aging and disease!

So Long, Blind Trust!

Blind trust in and of itself is not a bad thing, in fact, I wish we actually could just blindly trust our doctors! I wouldn’t have to think so much and do as much homework. Unfortunately the vast majority of doctors just do not have their patients best interests in mind. I can say that because “evidence-based practice” is growing among practitioners. The ones that have their patients best interests in mind lean heavily toward EBF (“Evidence-based medicine is the integration of best research evidence with clinical expertise and patient values.” (Sackett D et al. Evidence-Based Medicine: How to Practice and Teach EBM, 2nd edition. Churchill Livingstone, Edinburgh, 2000, p.1)).

In the case of childbirth for instance, you will hear many things that are simply just NOT TRUE. Here’s a short list for starters:
-Epidurals do not affect the baby
-You cannot eat during labor
-You have to birth on your back
-You can only push when dilated to 10cm
-Going past 40 weeks is dangerous
-Labor starts when your water breaks
-Babies are often too big to birth naturally
-An umbilical cord wrapped around the baby’s head is dangerous
-Inductions are safe

Prior to becoming educated on birth (through our birth class and further self-study) “going past 40 weeks is dangerous” is the only one that I knew to be false. I believed everything else listed! Even without doing actual research, if you stop and think about some of these, it becomes clear that they can’t be true.
-Epidurals do not affect the baby – ok, we can’t take ibuprofen while pregnant but we can get an epidural?
-You have to birth on your back – women practically every where else in the world birth in a variety of positions so that one is just ignorant.
-You can only push when dilated to 10cm – I find this to be a doozy. How do they measure how many cm you are dilated? Finger widths. Last I checked not everyone on the planet has the same size fingers.
-Going past 40 weeks is dangerous – due date is estimated by the last menstrual period, not by conception date and some women have longer cycles

Perhaps you are a man, or not with child. Let’s consider your own health then. Are you on prescription medications? Did you know COUNTLESS people end up going off their medications when they eat right? Long story short, eating right = whole foods plant based diet. That might not sound appealing, so it might depend on how serious you are about your health. Unfortunately America has not made it easy to eat right. AT ALL. So don’t feel bad if you’re in the fence. Do yourself a favor though and watch the documentaries that I mentioned the other day. You will hear about and see people whose severe melanoma and non-Hodgkins lymphoma went away in a matter of a few months. You will learn:
-That there is only a very small percent of people who develop cancer due to something in their DNA
-That depression can (and is) treated with high doses of niacin
-That there is something called megavitamin therapy with research that’s not easily accessible to the general public
-That there is a study on the entire country of China that clearly shows less disease due to better nutrition.
-That cancer after cancer has been CURED with food (and subsequent detoxing of the body)

The reason your doctor doesn’t tell you about these things is mostly because they don’t know. How could they not know?? I know! I mean, I hear you; it seems impossible…..until you continue to look into it!! Only 6% of doctors have any professional training in nutrition. It all comes down to who runs things. The drug companies have their hand in everything. These things are only the tip of the iceberg.

Do yourself (and your baby if you are expecting) a favor and do the digging. Of all the things in life to educate yourself on, shouldn’t your health and your child’s health and birth be one of them? I will be posting further information on almost everything mentioned in the months to come. Let’s leave blind trust up to our dogs and take our health into our own hands. You will be amazed at how much power you have!

Documentary-a-thon Weekend

I am a pretty health conscious person I would say. However, somehow it has taken me quite some time to watch some excellent and life changing documentaries.

Anyone who knows me knows I like to research pretty much everything. Not only do I like it, but it’s almost a compulsion I have. Which I wish I didn’t have at times. Knowledge IS power….but it can also make a person nuts (see I Might Have to Have a What Now?). At any rate, we started a free trial of Netflix to watch through our Wii and I was finally able to watch Forks Over Knives and Food, Inc….then Fat Sick and Nearly Dead and Food Matters.

With eyes as big as saucers and the wheels spinning in my head, I told my husband he had to watch them as well. Netflix said, “Oh you like those? Here then watch these” So I added about a dozen more to our queue and my husband has watched more of them than I have! So I will be using my free month of Netflix to be an information geek and I’m quite excited.

Let me sum up the four that I watched so far.

Forks Over Knives: Animal protein turns on cancer. Also, I would love to sit and talk to Dr. Campbell and Dr. Essyngton for days and days.

Food, Inc.: I’m not sure how Monsanto, Tyson and Perdue sleep at night. It also brought to my attention that I have become out of sight out of mind about my meat. If I have any meat anymore it has to be from local farm raised free range animals.

Fat, Sick and Nearly Dead: It really is time to just get a juicer already. I was also shocked at the life expectancy those people gave themselves. They know what they eat isn’t helping their health but they either can’t stop or can’t afford to stop and it’s really sad.

Food Matters: Whole food plant based diets cure damn near anything. Non-hodgkins lymphoma gone in a matter of weeks?? The facts and numbers shared in this one were jaw-dropping. 6% of medical doctors have any formal training in nutrition. The number of uneccesary deaths from uneccesary surgeries and medications is sickening. Why does the Hippocratic Oath even exist anymore? It should be the Hypocritic Oath.

I watched these while nursing our newborn and listening to my husband with our pole vaulting from the crib two year old, so I would like to watch them again when I can focus 100%. That might not be until 2022 though, so I guess I’m happy that I absorbed what I did.

If you haven’t watched them yet, I implore you to do so ASAP. Remember that you do have a choice about what you eat and about what happens to your health. The power is in YOUR hands.
